Adolescent Medicine

The Children's Hospital of Michigan adolescent medicine clinics specialize in the care of adolescents from ages 12 through 21. Established more than 10 years ago, there is a full complement of nurses, social workers, peer counselors, a nurse practitioner, and four physicians. All the physicians in the adolescent medicine clinics have specialized fellowship training in adolescent medicine, which has grown as a subspecialty since its introduction in the 1950s. By 1994, adolescent medicine had evolved into a full-fledged pediatric subspecialty with board certification. All of the adolescent medicine specialists at Children's are board certified in pediatric medicine and either board certified or board eligible in adolescent medicine.

As a whole, the clinics provide the following comprehensive adolescent health care services to all male and female adolescents, including those with chronic illness:

  • Complete school, camp, sports and routine physical examinations and immunizations.
  • Full pelvic examinations and pap smears.
  • Colposcopy examination and cervical biopsy of adolescent females with abnormal pap smears.
