The last beam for the new DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center - Detroit was hoisted into place on Friday, June 24. A ceremony, which marked the occasion, included the traditional placement of the beam with a live evergreen tree on top of the new building. The festivities were held at the construction site, located at 3950 Beaubien in Detroit.

During the ceremony President Herman Gray, MD, provided an update on the specialty center’s progress and introduced two nephrology patients and their families who will be directly impacted by the new pediatric facility. DMC President and CEO Mike Duggan also provided remarks and joined Dr. Gray and the family in signing the final beam.

The week preceding the ceremony in commemoration of the hospital’s 125th anniversary this year, members of the community, physicians, nurses, and employees wrote well wishes and signed the final beam to make their mark in the hospital’s history.

Within the next few months crews will pour the concrete floors for the 106,500 square feet facility. Later this summer, mechanical and electrical wiring and partition walls will be installed, and in the fall the curtain walls, or the outer shell of the building, composed of glass, aluminum, and brick masonry will be added.

"Following last year’s groundbreaking, placement of this final beam is a significant milestone toward the development of our new pediatric specialty center," said Dr. Gray. "Every inch of the space was developed with patients and families in mind, and the new center will offer expanded care for general pediatrics, pediatric specialties and rehabilitation services."

The facility is being designed by Shepley Bulfinch Richardson and Abbott (architects), Integrated Design Solutions (mechanical and electrical engineers), Giffel – Webster Engineers (civil and site engineers), and Ehlert/Bryan (structural engineers). The construction contract was awarded to the joint venture teams of L.S.Brinker/Barton Malow.
