A beam signing ceremony today signaled the official start of construction on the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan, scheduled to open in 2017 in the heart of the Detroit Medical Center’s (DMC) Midtown Detroit campus.
The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan will house expertly qualified pediatric researchers, clinicians and innovators in heart health, emergency medicine, critical care, neonatology, hematology/oncology, nephrology and other disciplines all focused on helping kids feel better.
Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients, their families, community members, DMC executives and staff joined the celebration, inscribing personal messages and well wishes that will be permanently encased on the 1.65 ton beam that will be placed as the cornerstone of this $155 million project.
“Children’s Hospital of Michigan was founded in 1886 and stands as a place of care and hope for the children of this region and state,” said hospital CEO Larry Gold. "Each year, doctors and community hospitals from near and far send thousands of critically-ill and injured children with complex medical conditions to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan for the advanced multi-specialty care that's only available in full service, freestanding hospitals dedicated entirely to children.”
The foundation of the new Children’s Hospital of Michigan will be the construction of a new 248,800 square foot, 6-story tower that will house the latest in emergency, surgical, critical care and radiology services. A new family-friendly main entrance and lobby will feature dramatic two-story ceilings, an 8,842 square-foot curved wall made of rainbow colored glass, among other features to delight kids and take their minds off the often difficult experience of being in the hospital.
"We’re building an innovative hospital with a transformative design reflecting the changing health care environment," said DMC CEO Joe Mullany. "This hospital modernization revolutionizes health care delivery for the children in our community and throughout our region."
The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan will continue that level of care in a healing environment designed to improve health, wellbeing and overall experience. Using a new construction industry process called lean integrated facility design, project developers incorporated feedback from patients and their families, employees and medical staff.
“This process will ensure we create the best possible experience for everyone who touches the patient in this new facility,” said Gold.
The current hospital was built as a state of the art hospital for children 44 years ago in 1971. The new Children’s Hospital of Michigan will offer a ground level Emergency Department with 48 exam rooms and 4 trauma bays. New and improved parking and traffic lanes will provide easy emergency department access for walk-in and ambulance patients. Larger neonatal and Pediatric units will feature private rooms for the most critically-ill babies and older children. These rooms will be twice as large as they are today and have plenty of space to accommodate doctors, residents, nurses, support staff and patients and families. Parents will also be able to comfortably stay with their children day or night. An updated Surgery Department will include operating rooms, and pre-operative and post-operative care spaces.
