On June 5, 2012 the General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine, Allergy and Immunology clinics began seeing patients in the new building. Other clinics will move in stages into the building throughout the summer of 2012.

Patients and families with appointments at the Specialty Center enter through a guard gate on Beaubien Street and proceed to ample, convenient and free surface-level parking adjacent to the center. They may also proceed to a glass and steel canopy cover at the front entrance, on the east (freeway) side of the building, for drop-off prior to parking. The specialty center opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday. Patients and families will register for appointments at centralized registration booths on the first floor.

Some environmentally friendly features include low flow faucets, daylight and motion sensor lighting, and porous exterior concrete pavement that allows rain water to pass through the concrete and naturally seep into the ground, reducing the load on storm sewer drains.

Art: On each floor of the building are displays of art, created by Detroit Metro area students, local artists and patients and families. Much of the art is created by kids for kids, or created by patients who participate in photography programs as part of their healing process.

Part of the building’s exterior design includes sculptures and two healing gardens, one on the south and one on the west sides of the building, to provide attractive color and pleasant scents all year.

Garden Level – Floor G

The center’s Garden Level houses Rehabilitation Services, containing state-of-the-art occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech therapy equipment, including a Lokomat – robotic body weight supported gait training system – as well as a gym and rock climbing wall. Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) physician clinics, including the Myelomeningocele (spina bifida) Clinic and Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Clinic, also occupy the ground floor.  This contiguous sharing of space allows the therapists and PM&R physicians to function as a truly integrated rehabilitation system for children with disabilities and special needs.

Because safety was a primary consideration in this construction, an automatic expanding/retracting fire-rated wall will allow patients and staff two hours of safety, while awaiting rescue, in event of a fire necessitating evacuation.

 Main Entry Level– Floor 1

Patients and families enter through the first floor east entrance under the canopy by the parking lot. A patient representative at the entrance will assist with directions. Centralized registration booths will be readily visible down the main corridor, across from a color-filled, free-form pewabic tile mural that represents the four seasons.

Once a patient is registered, they are directed to a large, colorful waiting area where a patient representative is located to assist with any needs while patients await their clinic visit.

The General Pediatrics (PEDS) Clinic, Adolescent Medicine (GPAM) Clinic, Retail Pharmacy (open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday), and the DMC University Lab (UL) occupy the first floor of the building in an expanded pod-concept clinic space.

The pharmacy, located across from the centralized registration booths, dispenses food, snacks and beverages as well as prescriptions.

Second Floor – Floor 2

The Dialysis Center and Infusion Center occupy the specialty center’s second floor, doubling the space of the previous Dialysis and Infusion Centers. These centers have family-friendly bays with high-back guest chairs, cushioned bench seats and storage for personal items.

Both centers were designed with significant input from patients who receive treatment there. Concern for patient comfort was paramount in the selection of equipment and each treatment bay is equipped with heated reclining chairs that provide comfort during treatment. Each bay is also equipped with swivel-mounted eye-level TVs, hand-held DVD players and WiFi, allowing patients to watch video, listen to music or email. Each bay has individual lighting capabilities on a dimmer for those requiring a relaxed setting. A nutrition station provides ice, water, juice, fruit, crackers, jello and sandwiches.

The Infusion Center houses a dedicated pharmacy that expedites the preparation of infusion medications.

The Children's Hospital of Michigan's Pediatric Dialysis Facility has been recognized as a 5-Diamond Facility by the Renal Network 11. Children's Hospital is one of two facilities in this region of hundreds of dialysis units awarded this status. The recognition is an appreciation for the work being done to promote patient safety and the entire team's devotion to patient safety issues within the dialysis community.

Hours: In addition to its regular weekday hours, the Infusion Center will be open on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the convenience of patients and families. Hemodialysis hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.. The Home Peritoneal Dialysis Unit and Home Training hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This floor is also the location of an expanded Immunization Station, X-ray and ultrasound services, two large conference rooms for staff education and an increased waiting area space. A waiting room patient representative staff member is available for patients and families awaiting a clinic visit.

Third Floor – Floor 3

The clinics that occupy the third floor are: Allergy, Dermatology, Diabetes, Endocrinology, Genetics, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, Metabolic Development, Nephrology, Pulmonary, Rheumatology, and Vasculitis.

These clinics are spacious and expanded. The third floor staffed by highly skilled subspecialty physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, respiratory therapists and child life staff and is specifically designed to provide interdisciplinary outpatient care for a variety of specialty care patients. There are three treatment rooms where minor procedures can be performed on the day of the visit. Care is enhanced by the existence of an on-site Lab draw-station, X-ray and Ultrasound services to complement the outstanding medical care provided.

Fourth Floor – Floor 4

Pediatric specialists from the DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan work in the environment of a highly regarded academic medical center, where both patient treatment and medical research are diligently pursued and run hand in hand. The fourth floor of the Specialty Center – Detroit was intentionally set up to house all physician offices on one floor in such a way that a collegial atmosphere allows for multi-disciplinary consultation among colleagues coordinating the treatment of their patients.
