Cardiac Services at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan are among the finest in the country. The hospital provides a full range of advanced cardiac services for newborns, infants, children and adolescents with congenital or acquired heart disease and for adults with congenital heart disease. From open- heart surgery and heart transplants to interventional catheterization procedures and fetal echocardiography, Children’s Hospital is the only hospital in Metro Detroit that provides comprehensive pediatric cardiac services.
As an academic institution, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is staffed by physicians actively involved in research. This research ranges from molecular causes of congenital and acquired heart disease, to the use of new devices in the catheterization laboratory designed to eliminate the need for surgery in certain forms of congenital heart disease. At the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, experts train physicians in the latest pediatric cardiology and cardiovascular surgery techniques. Currently, researchers are developing remarkable new ways to improve pediatric surgical procedures, including techniques to create cardiovascular tubes and valves from a patient’s own living tissues. If successful, the living-tissue tubes and valves would grow with young patients – eliminating the need for multiple tube-and valve-replacement surgeries.
