Communication Disorders

The Marie Carls Communication Disorders Center at Children's Hospital of Michigan, part of the Detroit Medical Center is dedicated to the identification, treatment and prevention of language, speech and hearing problems in children of all ages. The goals is to provide individualized diagnostic and treatment programs for children within the medical setting which provides a wide range of other specialties for referral when needed.

A full range of inpatient and outpatient services are provided by a highly qualified, experienced staff of speech-language pathologists and audiologists to provide the specialized care necessary to achieve their full communicative potential.

Complete diagnostic services are provided for:

  • Language disorders and delays including nonverbal behavior
  • Speech production problems
  • Voice disorders
  • Speech fluency disorders
  • Language-based learning disabilities
  • Central auditory processing disorders
  • Feeding and swallowing disorders
  • Communication problems related to closed head injuries
  • Hearing impairment

Diagnostic services for hearing impairment include state-of-the-art equipment which assist in identification of the type of hearing loss present. In addition, a mobile audiology clinic travels to out-state areas to provide a complete battery of services.

A full range of treatment services provided by speech-language pathologists and audiologists who participate in continuous professional development includes:

  • Treatment programs designed to meet the individual needs of children exhibiting any type of communication disorder
  • Hearing aid selection and related services for hard-of-hearing and deaf children from birth on
  • Hearing aid sales and dispensing
  • Auditory training and hearing therapy
  • Cognitive retraining for closed head injuries
  • Training for auditory processing disorders
  • Cochlear implant mapping, training and management

In addition, staff provides educational referrals, referral for other services as needed, recommendations for educators and other specialists working with your child.
