Pediatric Surgery Fellowship

Children’s Hospital of Michigan Pediatric Surgery training has been ACGME accredited since May 5, 1977. The Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Children's Hospital of Michigan is the largest pediatric surgery program in Metropolitan Detroit, averaging approximately 14,000 surgeries annually across all surgical divisions. An active acute pain service, chronic pain clinic as well as a large recently renovated NICU and separate newly renovated medical and cardiac PICU’s provide fellows with a well-rounded and clinically excellent pediatric surgery experience. The teaching faculty is comprised of board certified pediatric surgery faculty. The fellowship can be tailored according to interest.

Rotations by Training Year

The pediatric surgery fellowship is a two year fellowship that specializes in general pediatric surgical procedures encompassing abdominal, thoracic, genitourinary, gynecologic, oncologic, and endocrine surgeries. Additionally, fellows are trained in burn and trauma, as we are certified centers in both fields. In addition to offering a variety of operative procedures from common appendectomies to HIPEC, our program offers the unique opportunity to be directly involved in critical care. Fellows are the primary caretakers of the surgical patients in the NICU and PICU and are given unique educational opportunities to master various aspects of critical care including mechanical ventilation, TPN, and ECMO. Fellows are also given the opportunity to attention weekly burn, scar, or general surgery clinic to learn basic clinical procedures, preoperative work-up, and postoperative care of patients.

Level I Pediatric Verified Trauma Center

Children’s Hospital of Michigan has been a Level I Pediatric Verified Trauma Center since 1990 and Verified Burn Center since 2010. Children’s Hospital of Michigan is currently the only pediatric dedicated ABA burn center in the State of Michigan. We see on average 1200 trauma patients and 650 burn patients per year. The surgery fellow is involved directly with trauma and burn cases in the OR and works directly with the trauma & burn service to ensure continuity of care with our patients. The fellows are an integral part of the team by contributing their expertise knowledge to improve trauma and burn education at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. The surgery fellows share the goal to ensure standard of care for our patients, improve the outcomes, and hospital wide process improvements to better address the needs of the trauma and burn patients.

Research

An important part of our mission to provide cutting-edge care for our patients and a comprehensive educational experience for our fellows is to conduct innovative clinical, basic and translational research. Our team includes medical students, residents, attendings, scientists as well as collaborators from other departments and institutions. Our pediatric surgery research team and fellows routinely present their work at regional and national conferences and publish in leading academic journals. Our research is divided in seven general areas of interest: Burn Research Program (BRP), Trauma Research Program (TRP), Children’s Hospital Intestinal Rehabilitation Program (CHIRP), Surgery and Critical Care (SCC), Basic Science, Educational Research and Case Report Studies.

Curriculum

Rotations through component specialties ensure adequate exposure to all aspects of pediatric surgery techniques, including diagnosis and multi-disciplinary treatment modalities. Fellows will be provided with education, training, and experience required for a specialist in pediatric surgery.
