- Is Children's Hospital of Michigan affiliated with a medical school?
Children’s Hospital of Michigan has affiliations with Central Michigan University, Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine and Wayne State University. We have about 400 third year and fourth year medical students assigned to CHM's campus for their pediatric clerkship and sub-internships annually.
Our combined internal medicine/pediatric program is affiliated with Wayne State University.

What is the vision of Children's Hospital of Michigan?
Children's Hospital of Michigan will fulfill its mission by being an outstanding provider of child health services within the Detroit area and throughout Michigan to patients around the region, nation and globe. We will establish a national, regional and statewide child health system, promote a family-centered system of care and prevention, engage in the generation of new knowledge relevant to child health and well-being, educate physicians and other health professionals in the provision of care to children, and advocate for programs which will benefit children, families and communities.

What are your selection criteria?
In addition to strong scores on the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Learning Examination of the United States (COMLEX), we also prefer residency applicants to have graduated from medical school no more than five years before entering the residency program, unless the applicant has significant clinical experience in the interim. We look at the entire application when evaluating candidates; however, candidates must pass the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, and Step 2 Clinical Skills within the first two attempts.

No pre-match positions are offered in our pediatric residency training program

Do you have minimum USMLE or COMLEX scores?
No, we do not have minimum scores for the USMLE or COMLEX exams.

Do you accept candidates with COMLEX scores only?
Yes, however it is helpful for our osteopathic medicine candidates to also have USMLE scores.

Do you need to have completed USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Level 2 in order to apply?
No, we will review applications without USMLE Step 2/COMLEX Level 2 scores, however, we must have documentation of your successful completion of Step/Level 2 CK and CS by the time we submit our rank list in February.
USMLE Step 3 is not required for application purposes.

How will interviews be conducted in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic?
All interviews will be offered virtually to maintain a equal opportunity for applicants while promoting the health and safety of everyone.

What is the platform for virtual interviews?
The pediatric residency program will be conducting virtual interviews using the Zoom video conferencing platform.

I am local to the Detroit area. Can I have an in-person interview?
No, in order to maintain an equal opportunity for all candidates, all interviews this year will be conducted virtually.

What are the basic requirements for my virtual interview?
Applicants are encouraged to download the Zoom client on a desktop/mobile device. Reliable internet access along with a functional video camera and microphone are recommended. Please see the Zoom website to download the latest software prior to your interview.

What will the format be for the virtual interview process?
On the day of your interview, which will occur over a 3 hour time frame, you will interact with program leadership, faculty and residents. You will be interviewed by 2-3 faculty members and have an opportunity to chat with a resident one-on-one. You will experience a virtual tour of our facility and will have plenty of opportunities for questions and answers.

Will I have a chance to meet with residents during my interview?
For the pediatric residency program, we will have opportunities for informal "meet and greet" sessions with our residents with a "virtual" dinner experience the night before your interview. You will also have a chance to meet with residents and the chief residents on your interview day.

I am an international medical graduate and I am concerned regarding the timing of my virtual interview. What time zone does Detroit Michigan fall under?
We recognize that the virtual interview process has a lot of consternation for applicants. Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit is in the Eastern Daylight time zone EST. We will however be flexible in scheduling our interviews to fit an appropriate time of the day in your local time. For you information, you can refer to the National Institute of Standards and Technology website for local times.

How will I know I have been accepted for an interview?
All our communication with applications will occur through ERAS with time slots for interviews being posted through the site. Please ensure your email address is up to date to ensure no missed correspondences.
- I have medical school loans. Is there any financial help that CHM can provide?
Yes. Children's Hospital of Michigan meets the criteria for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. This program offers forgiveness for remaining debt after a physician has completed ten years of eligible employment and qualifying loan payments. (During those 10 years, an Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan can help keep your loan payments affordable.) For more information on the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program visit www.ibrinfo.org.
- How do I apply for a pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan?
Applications to all of our residency training programs must be sent through the Electronic Residency Application Service ( ERAS). ERAS is the service that transmits residency applications, letters of recommendations, transcripts and other supporting documents for candidates. The ERAS website is www.aamc.org/eras
- Do you participate in the Match?
Yes, our program utilizes the National Resident Matching Program to rank candidates. The NRMP Web Site is www.nrmp.org. Our NRMP number for the categorical pediatrics program is 1843320C0.
- What is the time frame for applying?
Applications are accepted from mid October through mid December.
- What changes are occurring due to the COVID pandemic?
Our program is following guidelines as recommended by the AAMC. For information regarding changes with ERAS for this year, please refer to the ERAS website Coronavirus and ERAS FAQ.
- How will I know if I have been selected for an interview?
All our correspondence with applicants will occur through ERAS. Please check your email listed on ERAS is up to date. Please follow the instructions on the email carefully for scheduling an interview.
- How can I find the status of my application?
Children’s Hospital of Michigan receives a large number of applications annually. It is not possible to notify every applicant of his or her application status. However, applicants who are selected for an interview will receive an interview invitation.
- Do you accept international medical graduates?
Yes, our program is committed to training the best pediatricians possible, regardless of country of origin.
- What types of visas do you sponsor?
The pediatric residency program sponsors J1 training visas.
- Is ECFMG certification required?
Yes, by the time of our submission to the match all international applicants must be ECFMG certified
- Do you offer observer ships?
No, at this time we are unable to accommodate observer ships.
