Pediatric Emergency Care
The Emergency Department (ED) at the Children's Hospital of Michigan DMC is an American College of Surgeons certified level one pediatric trauma center. We are also a regional burn and poison control center. From fevers and flu to life-threatening conditions, the Emergency Department at the Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit and the Children's Hospital of Michigan Specialty Center Troy cares for approximately 90,000 patients per year.The ED recently expanded and moved to the ground floor of the hospital’s critical care tower. The Emergency Department entrance is located just north of the main Children's Hospital of Michigan, off of Mack Ave. and I-75 at Beaubien Blvd. Free valet parking for the Emergency Department patients/families is available at the entrance.
The Emergency Department was built with efficiency in mind with 52 ED treatment rooms, 4 Trauma Bays and 6 Behavioral Health rooms. All processes and protocols were developed using lean methodology to improve quality and efficiency. The ED is structured into pods, where care teams work together to provide seamless care.
The ED is staffed by fellowship trained pediatric emergency physicians, pediatricians and nurse practitioners. The pediatric emergency medicine fellowship program, one of the largest in the country, attracts exceptional candidates from all over the United States.
When pediatric patients need emergency transport, a dedicated PANDA One intensive care transport team, staffed by specially trained registered nurses and respiratory therapists, provide timely response, 24 hours a day, to transport critically ill infants to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan from hospitals all across the state. Transport options include two dedicated ground ambulances, as well as by helicopter and fixed wing air for transferring hospitals that are located at further distances.
Emergency Care has also been expanded with the opening of the Children's Hospital of Michigan-Troy. Our Troy location is also staffed by our pediatric emergency medicine physicians and nurse practitioners with 9 treatment rooms to care for our patients.
ED Sedation Services
The Emergency Department (ED) at DMC Children’s Hospital of Michigan manages the hospital’s sedation service. It is dedicated to providing sedation for patients undergoing imaging studies. Pediatric emergency physicians sedate more than 2,500 patients per year as part of this service. ED faculty, staff the sedation service seven days a week. This service is an integral part of providing comprehensive and superior quality service to patients.
ED Imaging Services
A full range of radiology services are available for the evaluation of emergency patients. Two dedicated x-ray suites are located within the department. In addition, a 64-slice CT scan and the MRI suite are located adjacent to the ED. An active ultrasound and nuclear medicine service are also available as well as a PET and PET-CT scan exclusively dedicated to children.
Child Life Services
Child Life in the Emergency Department strives to reduce stress and anxiety that children and families may encounter while at the hospital. This is accomplished by providing preparation for procedures – through verbal teaching and play with medical equipment, support and distraction during procedures, and providing play opportunities to promote normal growth and development.
Social Work Services
Social work services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These services are quite valuable to the ED with staff being called upon for support in a variety of situations from trivial to extremely serious.

When a serious health emergency or injury occurs, seconds can matter. From the moment you enter our doors, our dedicated staff of emergency room doctors and medical professionals make it their mission to provide quality, compassionate care.
Choosing Emergency Care
So when should you visit us? If you or a loved one is in danger of dying or suffering from a serious illness or injury, you need to get to an emergency room fast. The following symptoms or situations are a sure sign of a medical emergency and require immediate attention. Call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room immediately if you experience:
- Difficulty breathing or choking
- Severe head injury
- Injury to your neck or spine, especially if there is loss of feeling or movement
- Serious burn or burn over a large part of your body
- Severe chest pain or pressure
- Passing out or fainting suddenly
- Arm pain with shortness of breath or chest discomfort
- Muscle strain, when tied to the inability to walk, fever or an open wound
- Jaw pain with shortness of breath or chest discomfort
- Unusual or intense headache that comes on fast
- Inability to speak, see or move
- Sudden weak or drooping sensation on one side of the body
- Inhalation of smoke or poisonous fumes
- Broken bone, especially if the bone is pushing through the skin
- Deep wound or heavy bleeding
- Coughing or throwing up blood
- Digestive problems, especially sudden, severe stomach pain, coupled with nausea and vomiting
- Intense back pain with numbness, weakness and fever
- Severe, debilitating pain anywhere on your body
- Serious allergic reaction with trouble breathing or swelling
- High fever that doesn’t improve with medicine
- Electric shock or lightning strike
- Suicidal thoughts/thoughts of hurting yourself or others
